Marketing. No doubt a much talked about activity in your practice, but what actually happens?
For many accountants marketing isn’t a skill that comes easy, indeed many professionals will do anything to avoid activities which sound vaguely marketing related!
But whether you like it or not, your practice needs to carry out some marketing activities in order to communicate effectively with existing clients and try to secure new ones.
If you’re running your own practice or you’re responsible for marketing your firm and you need to move from thinking/talking about marketing to actually doing marketing, here’s one tip to help you get started.
Choose ONE activity that you feel is a priority and aim to implement it within 3 months’ time.
Many professionals fail to do any (or very little marketing) because they create a wish list of all the things they think they should be doing and bluntly get overwhelmed by it, so nothing happens.
By breaking it down into one item at a time, you’ll make the activity manageable, won’t get overwhelmed with loads of different activities to implement and will be able to give it more of your attention. In short, you’ll make your marketing happen.
So, what marketing activities can you realistically implement within a 3-month timescale? Here are some ideas, pick one!
- Update the content or design of your website.
- Create a practice marketing brochure.
- Identify and attend at least 3 local networking events.
- Book and exhibit at a local show or exhibition.
- Organise a topical seminar.
- Recruit a part-time marketing person.
More often than not, once you implement one activity it gives you the confidence and motivation to do more.
So, give it a go. Pick one activity, set yourself a 3-month deadline and make it happen. Let me know how you get on!
