Marketing when you’re busy

It’s a common occurrence in accountancy practices and indeed most businesses. You know you should be doing some level of marketing throughout the year, but it all tends to stop when there’s too much client work to do. So how can you keep on marketing when you’re busy?

Outsource your marketing

The simple answer is to outsource some or all of your marketing activities to a third party.

Depending on what you want to achieve, this doesn’t need to cost a fortune, but it will enable you to maintain your presence in your marketplace and make it easy for potential clients to find you, whilst also keeping in touch with existing clients.

What marketing activities can you outsource?

There are a lot of activities which you don’t need to do yourself, whether you’re busy or not. Typical activities that could be outsourced to a third party include:

  • Putting together and sending newsletters
  • Regular social media posts
  • Updating page content on your website
  • Writing blogs
  • Telemarketing and appointment setting
  • Writing leaflets and brochures and overseeing the design and print elements
  • Writing and sending emails to invite people to a forthcoming event, or to promote specific services
  • Creating adverts
  • And so on.

But, in order for your marketing to be effective, you will need to have some involvement. You will need to liaise with your marketing specialist to make sure they are doing and saying what you want them to do.

For example, if you want someone to write a blog, I suggest you have a phone/zoom call to confirm the information and messages you want to communicate. The marketing person can then draft the content, but you will need to review it, make amendments if required, and sign it off. However, rather than it taking you anywhere between half or a full day do to complete the exercise, your time may be limited to half an hour or an hour to achieve the same outcome.

The costs of outsourcing your marketing

It’s impossible to give you any costs relating to outsourcing your marketing activities because each specialist will have a different way of pricing and there will be different levels of prices across the country.

However, in most cases, a third party marketing person is likely to have a lower charge-out rate than yours or your managers. Therefore don’t just look at this as a cost, look at it as freeing up your time to focus on your chargeable client work or practice management activities. So whilst you get on with the day job you can be confident that your marketing is happening even though you’re not having to spend time doing it.
